2010 YOUTH POLICE ACADEMY
From July 12th - 16th the Department held the 2010 Youth Police Academy. Cadets learned about the many aspects of police work from the officers of the Alma Police Department and other local agencies. A great time was had by all who participated. Graduates of the 2010 Academy were Troy Bastian, Adam Bemis, Jacob Chase, Cody Darmody, Drew Frisbie, Hunter Frisbie, Alex Greenup, Brendan Grandy, Chloe Humphrey, Lane Humphrey, Aidan Kunkel, Hunter Loomis, Dylan McCloskey, Alex Morford, Irene Murgittroyd, Noah Schneider, Taylor Shebester, Brandon Sitts, Nicholas Sitts, Alison Sparling, and Jake St. John. Aidan Kunkel and Alison Sparlilng recieved the Award of Excellence.
2010 TIM KARR MEMORIAL SOFTBALLTOURNAMENT
On August 22nd 6 teams competed and had fun for the seventh straight year while raising money for the Police Athletic League. The Mt. Pleasant Police Department became the first two time champion of the emergency services based tournament. MPPD also won last year. The MPPD defeated the Gratiot County Sheriff Dept in the final. Breckenridge Fire and Rescue defeated the Alma Police Department for third place. Mobile Medical Response earned their first ever victoy in the tournament over Gratiot Medical Center for 5th place. The event has become an annual get together of area emergency responders. This year Alma PAL received nearly $1500 from the participating agencies.
The event is named for long time community and emergency responder advocate Tim Karr who passed away in 2005 at ther age of 52. Tim was responsible for training many of the areas first responders in first aid and CPR. In 2004 PAL first hosted a softball tournament and needed volunteers to umpire. Tim just happened upon the games being played and asked if he could help out. 10 hours later Tim called the final out as the umpire in the championship game. This was the type of guy Tim was. He stopped by to help, and stayed the entire day. This year's touranment was very special as August 22nd is Tim's birthday. All who participated or attended the tournament had a great time remembering Tim and getting together for a good cause.
